In
the Thatcher years her party appealed to Essex Man. In 1997 Tony Blair
said that the so-called Mondeo Man was crucial to his election bid.
Lady Thatcher and Mr Blair are long gone but what happened to the Ford Mondeo?
At the end of the year the new Ford Mondeo will be launched and it promises to be a slim line marvel.

The new 2014 Ford Mondeo
The Sunday Times reports that it will have the world's most advanced engine.
Small
enough for its cylinder block to fit on a sheet of A4 paper, it is so
economical that the Mondeo will manage almost 70 miles per gallon on
motorways. And yet it will be more powerful than the 1997 car, which had
an engine twice the size.
The
family car will be the first to be fitted with a 1-litre engine, which
thanks to the advances in technology and turbocharging will go 20 miles
further than its 2-litre 1997 predecessor. It will produce 138 brake
horsepower, which is 10bhp more than the older engine.

It also uses petrol rather than diesel as new smaller petrol engines provide a significant improvement in fuel economy.
Three-cyclinder, 1-litre engines are used in a number of Ford vehicles already including the Fiesta, Focus and C-Max.
Vauxhall
will begin selling its Adam city car with a 1-litre unit this summer
and Fiat has a 0.9-litre petrol engine in its Panda and 500 model
ranges.
‘The
technology is fantastic,’ said Tony Dron, a former racing driver. ‘When
people buy cars, they always look at the performance figures when they
should really be looking at the fuel economy instead.
'But I don't foresee a day when people will be bragging about fuel economy in pub conversations.
‘So
a small engine with 138bhp (which is more than than enough) should give
good fuel economy without bringing the kind of performance the original
Mini had.’
