responded to reports of a shot fired inside a three-story home in the
600 block of Morton Street just after 11.30am Friday, only to find the
nine-year-old fatally wounded in the chest.
The
shooter, identified as the victim’s 14-year-old brother, reportedly
fled the scene but was detained by police a few blocks away with the gun
still in his hands.
Tragic death: Officers were called to this
three-story house in the Mattapan section of Boston, where they
discovered a 9-year-old boy with a fatal gunshot wound to the chest
inflicted by his brother
‘We believe the boy panicked,’ Boston Police Commissioner William Evans told Boston Globe. ‘As soon as we captured him, he was very remorseful for what he did.’
Investigators believe the teen was handling the gun when it discharged, killing his brother on the second floor of their home in the Mattapan section of Boston.
‘It looks like what we have here is terrible tragedy here. It looks like a brother shot his younger brother accidentally,’ Evans said.
According to police, the mother of the two siblings was 'nearby' when the gun went off at around 11.37am. Another child was also at home at the time.

Police are not sure why the children were not in school in the middle of the day. No charges have been filed in the case.
CBS Boston reported that officials are now trying to determine who was the owner of the gun, and whether or not it was licensed.
