After the taping, the 44-year-old Men In Black actor and rapper strolled out of the studio to throngs of expectant, shrieking fans, giving piece signs to the cameras and smiling broadly.
Smith again showed off his flashy suit in the bright Spring sunshine, worn with equally stylish brown dress shoes.
He walked up and down the barricades that had been set up outside the studio signing autographs and waving to the crowd.
The Independence Day star was a guest on Letterman as part of a press tour to promote the M. Night Shyamalan science fiction action film After Earth, which he stars in with his 14-year-old son Jaden.

However, the starring father-son pair have spent the majority of the time on talk shows addressing a report from The Sun, which quoted Will had finally accepted that Jaden wanted to be free from his parents as legal guardians.
'He says, ''Dad, I want to be emancipated,''' The Sun quoted Will as saying last Monday. 'I know if we do this, he can be an emancipated minor, because he really wants to have his own place, like ooh. That's the backlash. On the other side, if kids just want to have command of their lives, I understand.'
However, a few days later on Ellen, both the entire Smith family laughed off the story.

'I think I made a joke in Tokyo,' Will said, turning to Jaden to pinch his cheeks. 'I mean… my baby boy, he's never leaving me, ever. No emancipation for the Smith kids.'
The teenager claimed he didn't even know anything about the emancipation rumors until after the press tour began, as he doesn't 'really go on the Internet except for going on Tumblr.'

'See, here's the thing that you need to understand: I'm not going anywhere," Jaden told Ellen. 'The thing that people don't get is everything at this house is free! So I can get anything and everything at his house, so I'm going to be there 20, 30 more years.'
After Earth opens in theaters worldwide May 31.
