Ivory Coast captain Didier Drogba has been named winner of the 2012 Talent d’Or, a prestigious prize awarded by French satellite TV Canal Plus to an African professional footballer for his exploits during a complete season in one of the five top leagues in Europe.

The awards committee says the former Chelsea player was selected for his excellent 2012 season, topped of with the UEFA Champions League title.

Drogba succeeds Senegal international Papiss Cisse, who was crowned last year.

The 34-year-old Shanghai Shenhua new signing was handed the 2012 Talent d’Or trophy during a luncheon at the Hotel Ivoire in Abidjan on Saturday.
